What Do I Want To Be?

My mother used to ask me,
"When you grow up,
What do you want to be?"

I answered in a different way,
Depending on my mood,
On any given day.

The one thing I knew for sure
;
Teaching was one career
That I could not endure.

So, of course, what did I do?

I became a teacher
And loved it. Who knew?

But now those days are gone, you see,

And I'm still wondering,

"When I grow up, what will I be?"
JR

One would think that by the time a person reaches the age of 57, (okay, okay, I'm just shy of 58 by a month or so) that she would know what she wants to do with her life. Being a wife, mom and a granmomma are definitely the most rewarding things I've ever been!

Teaching was most definitely the right career for me for 33 years. But, now, I just don't know.
You know that I love to sew, but that is not all I do.

I love to write and illustrate. I've always wanted to write and illustrate children's books. I actually have done one. I have a bunch of stories rambling around in my brain. I just can't seem to get them on paper like I want them.

I've recently taken up paper cutting, too. This could turn into a passion.

I enjoy visiting the folks at the nursing home. Maybe, I'm meant to be a patient advocate or some such thing.

I love the youth at my church. I am having a ball with the puppet group I'm working with. (I am not loving the controversy that is going on in my church right now, though.) I've thought about being a volunteer advocate for children in the foster care program. There's a CASA group here, that does this sort of work.

I've thought about subbing at the local schools, but not too seriously. I like to have my days planned out too much to be able to drop everything and go in to sub at the last minute.

I would LOVE to think up something that could make some $$$$ to supplement the pittance that the state awards me as a retired teacher!!!! It's sad.

I know that I want to learn to tat, crochet, knit, quilt, and a whole bunch of other things. Below is something I'm definitely interested in!

Tatting Chic is having a giveaway for her second blogoversary!!! I have been wanting to learn to tat for years. She's giving away a learn to tat book. My grandmother wanted to teach me how to tat when I was a teen, but being a typical teen, I wasn't interested at the time. I do have her shuttles and yards of her tatting, but not the knowledge.

I have been thinking about my giveaway for having 100 followers. Please be patient with me while I get it all together. I will tell you that it will include some of my antique handkerchiefs, buttons, and a few other items along that line.
So, if you want to be included in this giveaway just start commenting. I will include your name twice if you mention in your comment that you are already one of my 100 followers.

If you aren't already a follower, but want to be included in the giveaway, just sign up now, and leave me a comment telling me that you did.
I will post about what all will definitely be included and when a winner will be chosen in a day or so. Life is hectic around here with both moms in the nursing home, Easter coming, possible guests for the weekend, etc.... Thanks for being patient!

I am one of your 100 followers! Do we ever answer that question of what do I want to be? I think it crops up all too frequently in our lives. Good luck to you deciding!

I'm taking the CASA classes in April. One best friend is a foster parent and the other is an attorney for OCS, so I've certainly felt a burden to help these dear chidren. I'm hoping that this will be a way that I can give back, once my baby starts school in August.

I'm still wrestling with the same question. But maybe, just maybe, I am already what I want to be when I grow up!

I'm a long-time follower. Yea, yea, yea!

I know what you can do to make money and get in shape at the same time. Take up hula hooping and make the hoops and sell them. What fun that would be. Just kidding of course. See my post for today to see pics of Emily and hula hooping.

Being your friend is prize enough :)
I think doing what your heart desires is a great way to be. You're all grown up self is being exactly the way you should be. And one big lesson I've learned. We're not always given what we want but always given what we need...the rest is up to us.

My husband spent quite a few years working within the foster care system as a social worker. Kids really need good advocates for them.

Have you ever thought about teaching garment construction? You've such a talent.

Of course I'm one of your followers! :)

I'm a follower already, of course! I still wonder what I want to be when I grow up. Freelancing is sporadic at best and I've been wondering what else I can do.

It sounds like you have lots of passions and I bet you will be drawn to the right thing.

I've gotten behind on my blog reading!! But I try not to miss yours, and you know I've been following you for a while! I often wonder if it's better to never figure out what to do when you grow up. Then what is there to look forward to?

Oh, Julia- you a wonderful blessing to everyone who knows you. How thoughtful to bring toiletries and newer clothes to the residents at your mom's home. Whatever you decide next, it will be amazing! I'm on my third (I think) career choice- first chemical engineering (lasted 2 years) then nursing, now nurse practitioner, next...? As the baby hopes grow fainter we are looking into adoption, who knows what might come from God's hand to us! :) xo, sarah

A giveaway! How fun! I'd love to be entered, thank you very much.

Paper cutting is such a fun thing to do, and it looks so much harder than it really is. That's my kind of handwork, wow the folks and smile to myself about how much I actually enjoy doing it. :)

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who hasn't yet decided what to be when I grow up!
