Sadness Is A State of Mind
Sadness is a state of mind
And of body and soul, I find.
If all I see is darkness and gloom
and sadness in my life, it will consume.
So, when things just aren't right
I must look around and seek the light.
It is all around me every day,
Even in just a smile that comes my way.
I need to let the warmth of love come in
And fill my heart to let happiness win.
Without happiness there cannot be success.
I sometimes forget this, I must confess.
I will try harder to remember this
When things don't go as I wish.

After finishing my grandmother's journals, I felt very sad. I'm glad I've had the opportunity to read them, but it saddened me to realize how lonesome she was the last couple of years of her life. We were all too busy to see it. I could have spent more time with her. I'm not going to beat myself up over it, because I didn't know. I hope this will help me to see that sadness in other people's eyes, and perhaps I can bring a little joy to them with a smile, an extra "hello", a note, a card, a phone call, or a visit.

This is a good reminder to be sensitive to the needs of others even in the midst of our business.
We need never to forget the elders. I understand their needs and their fears being an elder myself. I am blessed with a wonderful family and I am not alone. Make an effort to smile at someone who has years upon her or him so they know they are not invisible.
It is very sad when we see the elderly who are very lonely. I know a couple of widows who talk about being lonely, yet they always have people around them. Being lonely is the place where our heart is. When losing a spouse, loneliness is that empty place where their loved one lived. Or being an empty nester with nothing to fill the void. The seasons of life bring lonely times. I pray that I can offer a little bit of hope or encouragement to someone who has a lonely spot in their lives.
This reminds me of the saying that goes something like, "Be kind to everyone, because everyone is fighting some kind of battle." Or something like that. I know that just smiling to people can make a world of difference to their day, and mine!
